Cross stitch fabric calculator
Enter your pattern's size in stitches and pick your fabric. You'll get the finished size, how big to cut the fabric, and the smallest hoop that holds the whole design.
The same design on every fabric
Higher counts make a smaller, finer piece from the same pattern.

How it works
The count is how many stitches fit in one inch. Divide your stitches by the count and you have the size in inches: 140 stitches on 14-count Aida is exactly 10 inches.
"Over two" means each cross covers two threads of evenweave or linen, so 28-count over two stitches up the same size as 14-count Aida. The calculator handles that for you.
Add a margin on every side for the hoop to grip and for framing. Three inches, the default here, is the safe choice for anything you'll frame. Two inches is enough for a small piece going in a hoop.
Questions
Which fabric should a beginner use? 14-count Aida. The holes are easy to see and two strands of floss cover it well.
The design is too big for any hoop. What now? Use a scroll frame or Q-snaps. Hoops left on big pieces crush the stitches you've already made.
Can I change the size of a pattern? Only by changing the fabric count, or by making the pattern bigger or smaller in stitches. A photo pattern in Skeinshot can be resized before you start.
